Kendra Neilsen Myles holds a B.S. in Public Health with a concentration in exercise science from University of Maryland. After working with health education programs at Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, DC; sports medicine/physical therapy programs including Fitness for Health in Rockville, MD; and at the Women’s Health Clinic at University of Maryland while she was in college; Kendra opted to put continuing her medical education on hold, in order to help care for her mother who was sick with breast cancer. She found the “job of her dreams,” working for Johnson & Johnson as a territory manager for their Ortho-McNeil Women’s Health Care division. Kendra remained in her position for 6 years, earning numerous top sales awards during her tenure, until she was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) after the birth of her first child. Using the year and half that she had to take-off from her career with Johnson & Johnson, she focused on regaining her strength, in order to return to work in the field of profession she loved. During this time, Kendra sought a means to support her family through self-employment. Kendra believed she could build a business that met her health and financial needs – and Mediterina Medical Solutions, almost a decade later, proves this to be true as she has sold a fantastic product to hospitals through exclusive rights in the DC/Baltimore, MD area.
Over the last 9 years, Kendra has been an independent medical representative for Histoacryl Tissue Adhesive, grown Mediterina Medical Solutions into much more than “just something” she could do on her own, and provided life-changing freedom for herself and her family. Along with providing resources and support for Histoacryl & other medical device and supply products, Kendra started a small photography business with her sister called, SistersMedia, has been graciously asked to speak several times to the first year medical students through the Department of Genetics at the University of Maryland concerning Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and her experience as a patient with what has previously been viewed as a “rare” condition and serves as a volunteer for the Ehlers-Danlos National Foundation by answering HelpLine emails for the last 3 ½ years.
Kendra believes consistency, discipline, and hard-work pays off in her personal and business lives. Due to these beliefs, she opted to focus on the growth of Mediterina Medical Solutions, volunteering with EDNF, supporting the EDS community through various activities, and her health following back-to-back pregnancies, instead of diving right away into the development of her newest endeavour, EDS Wellness.
In marrying her active lifestyle with her passion to help the EDS community, Kendra solidified the success of the 1st ever EDS Ride for a Cause benefitting The Ehlers-Danlos National Foundation (EDNF) at Zengo Cycle in May 2014. The EDS “Ride for a Cause” was the 1st “active” fundraiser with the purpose of raising awareness and funds for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome research ever done in the US.
Through recruitment for the EDNF fundraiser, Kendra saw first-hand how imperative an active and healthy lifestyle is to overall quality of life for everyone living with EDS. Subsequently, Kendra was provided more opportunities to guest speak and while continuing to focus on the growth of Mediterina Medical Solutions, Kendra was able to slowly able to work towards the launch of EDS Wellness. Additionally, she was able to transfer her personal Strength/Flexibility/Health/EDS (SFHEDS) Intagram profile to a website and blog dedicated to sharing information on living well with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and related content. Kendra also partnered with an author in the EDS community on an anthology of stories from those living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Just as the SHFEDS website and blog was launched, Our Stories of Strength – Living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome was published, and the 2nd annual Ride for a cause for EDNF will scheduled for November 15th, 2015, more opportunities came about to partner with healthcare professionals who were interested diagnosing, treating and caring for patients with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.
It is because of all these recent life developments and new opportunities that Mediterina Medical Solutions and EDS Wellness will be able to provide the best medical products to those in the healthcare industry, while also partnering with healthcare providers on various projects such as seminars, webinars, and conferences, as well as projects involving digital and print media. Both companies also continue to provide patients with knowledge and tools necessary to regain their strength, health and life while living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and related medical conditions.
Kendra lives in the Washington, DC area with her husband of almost 13 years, her 3 children, 2 pups, and has fulfilled her childhood dream of living near her sister (and the rest of her family) in an area they collectively termed “Neilsenville.” Other than having a passion for her work in the medical field, as well as for fitness, health, and nutrition; Kendra is closet apple genius, avid first-adopter of all things health & fitness tech related, photographer, traveler, and reader.
